John Shortall is a Saint Agnes parishioner who finds coaching CYO basketball the perfect combination of two things he loves – kids and basketball. Although John doesn’t have any children at Saint Agnes Catholic School, each year he coaches a boys’ basketball team. John says he loves seeing the change in the boys as he coaches them from 4th through 8th grade and that his hope is that every player, regardless of ability, experiences the pleasure of being accepted as a teammate and of knowing that he is loved.

Sports

Saint Agnes participates in the Northern Virginia Junior Catholic Youth Organization (NVJCYO), a member organization of approximately 45 parishes from the Diocese of Arlington which organizes sports for students in grades 4 through 8.

Saint Agnes offers the following sports:

  • basketball (grades 4-8) — Participation Form
  • cross country (grades 4-8)
  • tennis (grades 4-8)
  • rallyball (introductory tennis, grades 1-3)
  • track and field (grades 3-8)

Coaches for CYO sports are volunteers from the school and parish community. Practices are held at Saint Agnes; games and meets are held on weekends at Catholic elementary schools throughout Northern Virginia.

Many students also participate in sports programs offered through Arlington County and private organizations, including soccer, basketball, football, baseball, and softball. These organizations make every effort to place students from the same school on the same team. Information about these sports programs are distributed through Saint Agnes to school families.

Saint Agnes also offers Girls on the Run©, a non-profit prevention program that encourages preteen girls to develop self-respect and healthy lifestyles through running. This program addresses all aspects of girls’ development — their physical, emotional, mental, social and spiritual well-being.
