First Penance and First Communion
Penance is the sacrament that reconciles sinners to God. As so defined by the Catholic Church, Penance is “truly and properly a sacrament, instituted by Christ our Lord, for reconciling the faithful to God as often as they fall into sin after baptism.” (Dinzinger 1701) It is the sacrament which heals the faithful and unites the body of Christ, His Church.
First Penance is received before First Communion. First Penance and First Communion are normally received in second grade. Parents and children participate in a preparation program facilitated by the Director of Religious Education. To be eligible, children must be enrolled in Catholic school or CCD. First Penance is usually scheduled in February and First Communion in May
Confirmation is the sacrament “in which through the laying on of hands, anointing with chrism, and prayer, those already baptized are strengthened by the Holy Spirit in order that they may steadfastly profess the faith and faithfully live up to their profession.” (Catholic Dictionary, Hardon, S.J.) Preparation for Confirmation is facilitated by the Director of Religious Education. To be eligible, children must be in eighth grade or above and must be enrolled in or have attended Catholic school or a CCD program. To view documents for Sacramental Preparation 2014, click here.
The Sacrament of Marriage is a vocation and covenant by which a man and woman vow themselves to each other in a union of self-giving love and in openness to God’s plan for tile continuation of the human race. A couple interested in Christian marriage must consult with a priest at least 6 months before the wedding.
