St.
Agnes School emphasizes academic achievement,
love of God, and charity towards others. The School
cultivates the potential of the whole child through
a rigorous course of academic study, religious
instruction, physical education, and training
in the arts. The growth of each child is encouraged
and supported through the efforts of a close-knit
and caring community of students, parents, church
leaders, and teachers.
Brief History of the School
St. Agnes School opened on August 20, 1946 with
200 students and five grades. In 1948, the School
expanded to eight grades and in 1951 ground was
broken for the building of a new Church (currently
our school gym) and an addition to the school.
Many changes have taken place since 1946. The
faculty of nuns has been replaced with professional
teachers – over 60% of whom have advanced
degrees – and teaching assistants. An expansion
and renovation of the school completed in 2000
added a new Middle School wing, modern library
space, state-of-the-art science lab, and computer
facilities. Today, St. Agnes has 380 students
from pre-K through 8th grade.
St. Agnes Catholic School has always attracted
students from all parts of Arlington and surrounding
areas. The School is centrally located –
situated near the Orange Line corridor and close
to the Glebe Road exit on I-66 and Washington
D.C. We are just blocks from Ballston and Arlington
Central Library.
Academics
St. Agnes School provides students with a strong
background in mathematics, language, science,
computer studies, and social studies. The new
science lab facilitates instruction in the life
and earth sciences, chemistry, and physics. Our
8th grade students are given the opportunity to
study high-school
level algebra. Students also receive weekly instruction
in art, music, Spanish, and physical education.
We are proud of the success of our students. Our
graduates have an exceptional track record in
gaining acceptance to their first choice high
schools. Recent graduates currently attend the
following high schools: Bishop O'Connell; Bishop
Ireton; Paul VI, St. Alban’s; St. John’s;
Academy of the Holy Cross; Georgetown Visitation;
Gonzaga; Heritage; Oakcrest; Yorktown and Washington-Lee.
Each class of St. Agnes graduates receive numerous
academic scholarships, including, in several of
the past years, one of the few full-tuition academic
scholarships awarded by Bishop O'Connell High
School.
Religious Education
St. Agnes teaches Catholic values in an environment
where Christian ethics are cherished and maintained
as part of everyday life. Our strong ethics and
faith-based education provides a solid foundation
for high school and beyond. Students receive daily
religious instruction, participate in the Model
Virtues program, assist the disadvantaged, and
are prepared for the Sacraments of Reconciliation,
Communion, and Confirmation. The close-knit St.
Agnes community also helps promote the ethical
and religious education of the students. Our goal
is to imbue in each child a love of God and neighbor.
When a member family faces difficult times, the
St. Agnes community -- consistent with the School’s
religious mission -- comes together to provide
assistance. Students, parents, teachers, and church
leaders have joined in the past to supply various
kinds of aid: food, financial assistance, gift
baskets, transportation, prayers, friendship,
and more.
Although St. Agnes is Catholic in structure and
orientation, our student body includes children
of many beliefs and ethnic backgrounds. Every
child is welcome, regardless of race, creed, or
national origin.
Academic Enrichment
The
St. Agnes School Academic Enrichment Program offers a variety
of expanded opportunities for all students to
experience history, literature, religion, science,
the arts, and other subjects outside the classroom
setting.
This program is tailored to the interests and
needs of the school community, and includes monthly
school-wide assemblies that feature performances
or presentations by skilled educators, artists,
and professionals. These interactive and fun assemblies
expand on subjects learned in the classroom and
challenge students to broaden their academic and
cultural horizons.
The Enrichment program also offers students a
wide range of after-school (often fee-based) courses
and seminars, currently including: Spanish, French
and Latin language classes; Chess Club; piano,
guitar, violin and cello lessons; Great Books;
Public Speaking; Math Club; Huntington Learning
Study Skills Course; Mad Science; and Drama/School
Play.
Additional After School and Extracurricular Activities
St. Agnes offers early-morning and after-school
extended day programs that include physical activity,
structured free time, and homework sessions with
peer tutoring. In addition, numerous extracurricular
activities are available, including yearbook,
scouting, CYO and county sports teams (including
baseball, basketball, tennis, soccer, lacrosse,
and football), peer mediation, choir, band, and
student council.
